UFCP Celebrates 110th Philippine Independence Day

June 15, 2008. The UFCP spearheaded the celebration of 110th Philippine Independence Day at COM Pohnpei Campus Gym. The day started with the Philippine Flag raised at the Filipino Community Center (FILCOM Center) at PICS Area. A motorcade followed showcasing the floats of Pohnpei Arts & Crafts, TDIP, STAP & Cabalen. The awarding of winners in the recently concluded 2008 UFCP Sports Fest followed (see related story). After a sumptuous pot luck lunch, a simple cultural program followed. Beautiful dances depicted the Philippine culture, among them are maglalatik, itik-itik, magtanim ay di biro, montones de seda (Spanish Jota), salidsid (igorot dance), and Muslim ethnic dance. There were also song numbers and balagtasan. Among the noted guests during the lunch and program were Gov. John Ehsa of Pohnpei State, Mr. RichardPruett, the Deputy Head of Mission of the US Embassy, and diplomatic representatives from the Australian Embassy headed by Ambassador Susan Cox. In his keynote speech, Gov. Ehsa noted that he was a 4th generation Filipino, to the cheers of the crowd.
